What the assistant can and can't access

Before pointing an AI at your family’s calendar, you deserve a precise answer to “what exactly can it touch?” Here it is.

A connection is tied to the member who created it and carries exactly that member’s permissions - the same role rules that apply when you use the app yourself (roles and permissions). It sees only what you can see in the app - nothing more. There is no special AI access level.

Through the connection, the assistant can work with your family’s calendar and lists:

  • Read events - titles, dates and times, locations, descriptions, who’s assigned, and whether an event is family-wide or private (within what you can see)
  • Create, update, and delete events
  • Read lists and their items
  • Add, update, check off, and delete items; create, rename, and delete lists
  • Other families - families are isolated from each other in the database itself; a connection can’t reach another family’s data even in principle.
  • Membership and settings - it can’t invite or remove members, change roles, or touch family settings, notification preferences, or your account.
  • Private events beyond your role - a connection made by a member who can’t see an event can’t see it either.
  • Your email, photos, or sign-in - the connection covers calendar and list content, not your account’s credentials or media.
  • Changes are recorded as yours. Every action taken through a connection is attributed to the member behind it - the calendar never mysteriously changes with no one responsible.
  • Each connection is listed in Settings → Connect an AI app, with when it was last used.
  • Disconnect works instantly, and a connection also stops working on its own if the member behind it leaves the family.

While connected, your requests and the data the assistant reads are processed by that AI app’s provider (Anthropic for Claude, OpenAI for ChatGPT) under their privacy terms - that’s inherent to using any AI assistant. Quok’s side of the story is in How Quok handles your family’s data. If that trade-off isn’t right for your family, simply don’t connect - every Quok feature works without it.
